征服王ウィリアム1世はノルマンコンクエストでイングランドを領地にしたのち、土地台帳を作ります。これが有名な「ドゥームズデイブック」です。これを分析したら、180人の領主のうち、アングロサクソンの名前を持っているのはたったの6％で、あとの94％は全部フランス人でした。フランス人というよりもフランスから来たノルマン人なので、フランス語を話すバイキングがイングランドを乗っ取ったということです。

　ですから、イングランドはよくアングロサクソンの国といわれていますが、それより前はデーン人に征服され、その後はノルマン人に征服されたので、実は支配層にはアングロサクソンのDNAはおそらくほとんど残っていません。アングロサクソンの人々は主として農民です。

　ちなみに牛を意味する英語にはビーフがあり、カウがあり、オックスですよね。支配階級のフランス人にとって牛は食べ物だったので、ビーフというフランス語が英語に入り、アングロサクソンにとって牛は飼って、耕して、領主に献上するものだったので、オックスとかカウという英語が残ったといわれています。

　そうすると、次男、三男で部屋住みの人は乗ってみようかと思いますよね。これが十字軍です。当方の人にとっては、フランク（ヨーロッパ）の侵略です。

　ラッキーなことに、その時期セルジューク朝が分裂していたので、エルサレムが陥落して、十字軍国家をつくることができたのです。

　ところが、1127年にセルジューク朝のザンギーという優秀な臣下がイラクのモスルを拠点にして、シリアやパレスチナの統一を始めます。イスラム国家が統一に向かったら、もともと東方の方がはるかに文明も進んでいて、レベルも高いわけですから、十字軍国家にとっては大変なことになるわけです。お互いに争いをやっていたから漁夫の利でエルサレムを落とせたけれど、イスラム勢力がまとまったら大変なことになるということはすぐに分かりますよね。

　1115年にフィレンツェではコムーネと呼ばれる市民の自治団体が成立します。都市国家ですね。イタリアではコムーネを舞台にザーリアー朝の次にローマ皇帝を継いだギベリンとゲルフの争いがおきます。ギベリンというのはホーエンシュタウフェン家の城塞の名前ですので、ホーエンシュタウフェンに賛成する人がいわゆる皇帝派です。このシュタウフェン朝の一番のライバルがヴェルフ家という名家でこれがなまってゲルフといわれて、俗に教皇派といわれています。要するにギベリンとゲルフの争いというのは、皇帝対教皇の争いではなく、シュタウフェン家に付くか、反対側に付くかという争いだと理解をしておいてください。

　1122年「ヴォルムス協約」によって叙任権闘争は終了します。司教の任命権は教皇に、ただし、司教の領土の授封権は皇帝にという形になりました。これは引き分けのように思われますが、それまでは皇帝が全部取り仕切っていたので、ドイツ王、皇帝サイドの敗北です。

　このことによって、ヨーロッパは楕円形の世界、皇帝と教皇がそれぞれ権力を分け合うような世界になります。それまでは皇帝が圧倒的に強かった。司教の任命も全部していた。でも、この協約で教皇権が強くなってきたわけです。これは、前述したように「3身分思想」（祈る人、戦う人、耕す人）が普及したおかげだと思います。
