①人類のグレートジャーニー 紀元前20万年～紀元前3000年 河東 丈二

グレートジャーニーの原動力は一体何だっただろうかと疑問を子供の頃から抱いており、

　人間はいつごろ生まれたかといえば、20万年くらい前にアフリカで生まれたということになっています。これはいろいろな遺伝子分析や化石などから考えて、ほぼ間違いがないといわれています。そして一部の人がアラビア半島沿いにユーラシアの方に旅を始めたのが10万年ぐらい前です。グレートジャーニーといわれていますが、どうして旅を始めたかというと、美味しい肉がが食べたくなったからです。10万年も東アフリカに居たら、近くにある美味しいものはだいたい食べ尽くした。うっすらとアラビア半島が見えているので、一部のイノベーターは「あっちに行ったら美味しい牛や馬がいるかもしれない」と思ってユーラシアに全世界に散らばって行きました。

アフリカ大陸が人類の中、最も発展が遅れたことは近年の歴史では16世紀の奴隷として働き手であった10代～40代を根こそぎ連れていかれたせいにしてあるが、実は10万年前イノベーターはユーラシア大陸などの散らばって、無能で勇気のないな人ばかりが残ったせいだと

僕は思います。

何で肉を求めて行ったことが分かるかというと、地層を掘っていくとメガファウナと呼ばれている大型草食獣の骨が、ある時代に激減して同時にホモ・サピエンスの骨が出始める。誰が考えてもこいつらが食べたということが分かるわけです。人間ってやっぱり食べることが大事で、美味しいものを求めて全世界に散っていったというのが人間の歴史です。

　人間は20万年前に生まれてから19万年ぐらいは世界中を放浪していたのですが、1万年ぐらい前にドメスティケーション（定住的狩猟採集）を始めます。「食べ物やいろいろなものを探して世界中を放浪するのはもうやめた」と。ここにとどまって周囲を支配しようと考えだしました。

植物を支配するのが農耕。動物を支配するのが牧畜。金属を支配するのが冶金ですね。そのうちに自然界の真理や原理も支配したいと神を創造します。定住が始まってからしばらくして、いろいろな人間の形をした土偶が作られるのですが、用途がわからないので多分拝んでいたのだと思います。定住によってそれまで存在しなかった農耕や牧畜を作り出す、つまりドメスティケーションというのがホモ・サピエンスの歴史の中では大きい契機になります。

　もう1つ大きい出来事が言語の発明です。これがいつごろ起こったかは実はよく分かってないのです。グレートジャーニーとほぼ同じ頃だという人もいるのですが、言語はコミュニケーションの手段ではなくて、思考のツールとして生み出されたというのが今の通説です。つまり言葉を使って考えることを始めたということです。B.C.4000年ごろ。メソポタミアで初めて文字が生まれました。ここからホモ・サピエンスの狭義の意味での歴史が始まります。

文字はどうやって生まれたか。例えば、誰かが馬を借りに来たので馬を貸します。馬を貸したことを何か覚えておかないといけないので、粘土のボウルを壺（つぼ）に入れて「馬1頭貸した」と。今度は麦を借りに来る人がいる。「麦も貸した」と。同じ壺に入れ

たらこんがらがるので違う壺に入れておきます。でも取引が増えてくると壺も増えてしまうので、「じゃあ、ボウルに印を付けたら壺1つでいい」と、麦が「◯」とか馬が「△」だとか付けていく。このトークンの印から文字が始まり、取引が増えるたびに記号が複雑になっていって、文字が進化したといわれています。こうして世界最古の文明がメソポタミアのシュメールで始まりました。

その次にエジプトに文明が起こります。メソポタミアとエジプトは陸路で行けますから、お互いに刺激しあって文明が起こったのですが、後から起こったエジプトの方が早く統一国家ができます。ピラミッドができたりするんですね。なぜかというと河川の違いです。エジプトを流れるナイル川は真っ平でゆったり流れているので物資の輸送も貯蔵するのも楽。蛮族がきてもすぐに分かります。ところがチグリス川もユーフラテス川も、ナイル川に比べれば急流です。蛮族も侵入しやすい。メソポタミアの方が先に文明が始まったのに大きい王国ができなかったのは、そのような地理的要素が大きかったからです。

　ピラミッドができた頃、第3の文明としてインダス川流域でも文明が起こりました。昔は、四大文明はばらばらに起こったと考えられてきましたが、そうではありません。シュメールとインダスは海路を通じて交易をしていたことが分かっていますから、刺激し合ってインダス文明も始まったと考えられています。インダス文明特有の印章などがバーレーンなどのアラビア半島の港とか、イラクで出土していることが証拠です。
