㊼コロンブスの新大陸発見 河東丈二

1492年はコロン、いわゆるコロンブスがバハマ諸島に到達した年です。コロンが、新大陸に到達したことは実は大変なことでした。前回、ペストの大流行の話をしましたが、ペストでも死ななかったヨーロッパ人はめちゃ強い免疫を持った人間です。そのめちゃ強い免疫を持ったコロンの船隊がバハマ諸島に着いて、そこでくしゃみをしたらどうなるか。ユーラシア（旧大陸）のめちゃ強い病原菌が新大陸にまん延したので、新大陸の人々は9割以上死んでしまうわけです。免疫を持たないわけですからね。天然痘やはしかなどの免疫を持たない新大陸の人々は、旧大陸の人が来ただけでみんなバタバタと死んでいきます。

　あまりにもたくさんの人が死んでいくので、領土を得ても耕す人がいないために、アフリカから黒人を連れてくるということになりました。ということは、働き手を奪われたアフリカが衰退するわけです。

　ちなみにコロンの新大陸到達は「コロン交換」と呼ばれ、新大陸と旧大陸でいろいろなものが交換されました。ジャガイモやトウモロコシ、タバコなど食料面では旧大陸が圧倒的に得をしました。もちろんコロン交換は、病原菌も含めてです。では、病原菌の交換では、新大陸と旧大陸では0勝100敗だったかといえばそうではなくて、1勝99敗ぐらいです。新大陸も梅毒を旧大陸に輸出することによって一矢を報いました。しかし、規模が違います。

　ヨーロッパに話を戻します。イタリアはロレンツォが死ぬまではローディの和が保たれていて平和でした。ところが、フランスにシャルル8世という突進公のような王様が即位します。

　この王様は騎士道精神や英雄譚に興味を持っていました。そして、いろいろな歴史をひもといて、もともとイタリアはフランスのものだという誇大妄想に駆られて、イタリアに攻めていくのです。一方、ロレンツォの息子のピエロは父親がやったように、「フランス王と交渉して、帰ってくれと言ってくるわ」と出掛けるのですが、能力も人望もありません。箸にも棒にもかからずフランス軍が迫ってくるので、怒ったフィレンツェの市民はメディチ家を追放したのです。

　ところが、振り子は正反対に振れるので、追放した後、フィレンツェはメディチ家を批判していたお坊さんのサヴォナローラに政治を任せてしまいます。サヴォナローラはめちゃ張り切りますが、元はお坊さんですから「ぜいたくはあかん、美しい絵画や宝石があるからみんなの気持ちがおかしくなるのだ」などと言って、芸術作品を広場に集めては燃やしてしまうのです。

　そこでフィレンツェの市民も気が付くわけです。「ぜいたくはあかんというけれど、質素な生活はもっとしんどいな。それに、朝から晩まで神様に祈れという生活はできっこない。たまには酒も飲みたいな、宴会もしたいな」と思い始めるのです。

　そのタイミングを待っていた時の法王、ボルジア家のアレクサンデル6世が上手に動いて、サヴォナローラを火あぶりにし、フィレンツェはまた普通の状態に戻りました。清く正しく貧しく美しくという政策は、だいたいどこの世界でも失敗しているのです。最初はみんな拍手しますが、それがずっと続いたら耐えられなくなる。人間ってやはり、だらしがない動物だということがよく分かりますね。

　また、1494年に開業して世界に大きな影響を与えたのがアルド印刷所（アルディンプレス）です。アルド・マヌーツィオ、ラテン語ではアルドゥス・マヌティウスという人が、ベネチアにアルド印刷所をつくって印刷を始めます。このときに初めて、現在の大きさの本が生まれ、しかも本にページが付くのです。読みやすいでしょう。だから、印刷はグーテンベルクではなくてアルド印刷所が、ヨーロッパの印刷革命の一番大きいポイントだと、最近では考えられています。

Savonarola is very enthusiastic, but since he was originally a priest, he said, "Luxury is bad, beautiful paintings and jewels make everyone feel crazy," and he collects works of art in the plaza and burns them.

The citizens of Florence also noticed there. "luxury is bad, but a simple life is more difficult. Besides, I can't live a life of praying to God from morning till night. Sometimes I want to drink alcohol, I want to have a banquet."

The Pope Alexander VI of the Borgia family who was waiting for that timing moved well, burning Savonarola and Florence returned to normal. The policy of being pure, right, poor, and beautiful has failed in almost every world. Everyone applauds at first, but if it continues for a long time, it becomes unbearable. You can see that humans are sloppy animals.

Also, it was Aldine Press that opened in 1494 and had a great influence on the world. Aldus Manutius, or Aldus Manutius in Latin, set up an Aldine Press in Venice to start printing. Only then will a book of its current size be born, and the book will have pages. It will be easy to read. So, printing is nowadays considered to be the biggest point of the European printing revolution, not Gutenberg, but the Aldine Press.
