アメリカはどうして独立したかという話ですが、先ほどの7年戦争を思い出してください。イングランドはヨーロッパ戦線には兵隊を送らず、ちょっとお金を送っただけで、ひたすらインドと北アメリカで戦争をして、カナダを手に入れましたよね。ということは、イングランドはアメリカで大金を使っているわけです。そのお金を回収しないとダメ。自分たちが勝手にアメリカに戦争に出向いて行ったのに、ロンドンの議会は「戦争したのはアメリカだよな。このお金はアメリカ人に払わせたらどうだ」ということで、砂糖法とか印紙法とかタウンゼント諸法で、植民地の課税をがんがん強化しようとするわけです。

　でも、アメリカ人にしてみれば、ロンドンの議会に1人も代表を出していません。アメリカで戦争したのはロンドン議会が勝手に決めたことだ。アメリカ人も徴兵されて、自分たちの土地も荒らされていますよね。その代金を全部俺たちに払えとは、「何という国だ。こんな国の植民地のままでいるのは許されない」と怒ったわけです。

　これが有名な「代表なくして課税なし」です。意見も言えないのに、金だけ集めるというのは許さないというのがアメリカ独立のもともとの根源ですよね。

　こうしてアメリカ独立戦争が始まります。この独立戦争ではアメリカ植民地とイングランドが戦うわけですが、イングランドは7年戦争で北米にあったフランスの植民地を根こそぎ分捕ったのでフランス人は怒っています。「俺たちがヨーロッパで必死に戦っている間に、ヨーロッパには一兵も送らず、俺たちの植民地を奪った。イングランドを懲らしめよう」と思っていますよね。そのイングランドとアメリカ植民地が戦争を始めたということで、ラファイエット将軍をはじめとしてフランスの多くの義勇兵が植民地軍に加わってイングランドと戦います。一種の仕返しですね。

　アメリカは勝ちます。そして独立しました。フランス人の貴族や将兵はアメリカの独立戦争を戦って勝利を収めたわけですから、気分が高揚していますよね。それだけではなく、人間は生まれながらにして平等だと。植民地の人間も平等だと。何もロンドンの支配に服する必要はないというアメリカ独立宣言の自由平等の精神をフランスに持ち帰るわけです。

　そのときフランスはというと、ルイ16世の時代で、ルイ14世、ルイ15世のむちゃな政治がたたって、国家の借金が大変な金額になっていました。しかも絶対王制です。アメリカで自由平等のはしかにかかった人がフランスに帰ってきたら、フランスの旧体制はひどいと思うのは当然です。

　ロシアのエカチェリーナ2世は極めて有能な君主で、1774年のキュチュク・カイナルジ条約で黒海の北岸をロシアが全部獲得して、黒海の自由航行権をオスマン朝に認めさせます。つまり、クリミア半島はエカチェリーナ2世がまずゲットしたのです。

　ロシアにとっては南方の暖かい港を得ることが国家戦略上、とても重要だったので、黒海はすごく戦略的な意味があったわけですよね。だから、エカチェリーナ2世はピョートル1世に次いで大帝といわれるのです。ロシアにはこの2人しか「グレート」の名前が付く皇帝はいないのですが、ピョートル1世はサンクトペテルブルクという港を開き、エカチェリーナ2世はクリミア半島を手に入れて黒海への道を切り開いたということで歴史上高く評価されているのです。

Americans have also been drafted and their land has been devastated, hasn't it? When England asked American to pay all the money, American was angry, saying, "What a country. It is unacceptable to remain a colony in such a country."

This is the famous "no taxation without a representative". The original root of American independence is that Americans can't say anything, but just collect money.

This is how the American Revolutionary War begins. The American Revolutionary War fights England against the American Revolutionary War, but the French are angry because England has uprooted the French colony in North America during the Seven Years' War. You're thinking, "While we were fighting desperately in Europe, we didn't send any troops to Europe and robbed our colony. Let's discipline England." America wins. And became independent. French aristocrats and soldiers fought the American Revolutionary War and won, so it's uplifting. Not only that, human beings are born equal. Colonial people are also equal. It brings back to France the spirit of freedom and equality of the United States Declaration of Independence that nothing needs to be subject to London's rule.

At that time, France was in the era of Louis XVI, and due to the messy politics of Louis XIV and Louis XV, the national debt was a huge amount. Moreover, it is an absolute monarchy. When a person with measles of freedom and equality in the United States returns to France, it is natural to think that the old French system is terrible.

Russia's Catherine the Great is an extremely capable monarch, and Russia acquires all of the northern coasts of the Black Sea under the Treaty of Küchük Kainardi in 1774, allowing the Ottoman Empire to recognize the right to free navigation of the Black Sea. For Russia, getting a warm port in the south was very important in terms of national strategy, so the Black Sea had a very strategic meaning. Only these two emperors in Russia have the name "Great", but Peter the Great opened a port called St. Petersburg, and Catherine II acquired the Crimean Peninsula and paved the way to the Black Sea.
