『65』英国エリザベス女王の祖先はドイツ人

1714年、イングランドのアン女王が死去し、ステュアート朝が断絶して、ハノーファーのジョージ1世がイングランドの王位に就きます。しかしジョージ1世はドイツ人ですから英語は一言も話せなかったし、ハノーファーの方が居心地いいので、頻繁にドイツに帰っていました。

　しかし議会は喜んだのです。「英語ができない方が都合いいのではないか。出来ない方が政治に口出さないから」と。こういう発想が平気でできるイングランドという国は本当にしぶといですね。こうして、ハノーファーのジョージ1世から現在のエリザベス2世まで続いているのです。この一族はほとんどドイツ人同士で結婚を繰り返したので、血液の9割以上はドイツ人だといわれています。だから王様も輸入していいのです。うまく育てて、うまく国が統治できれば。これが大英帝国、連合王国の強さだと思います。

　フランスではルイ15世が即位し、長期間統治しました。極めて凡庸な君主で、好きなことはガールフレンドをつくるぐらいでした。ルイ14世が戦争をしまくってつくった借金は全部そのまま残っているので、次のルイ16世はかわいそうですね。フランス革命の伏線は、ルイ14世が戦争でお金を使いまくったこと。その後を継いだルイ15世が凡庸だったことに尽きると思います。

　1718年、カール12世はスウェーデンに帰って、デンマークやノルウェーと戦争を引き続き行うのですが、同年に最前線で死亡します。いくら戦争の天才でも、ロシアやポーランド、デンマーク、ノルウェーと18年も戦争を続けていたら、人口が少ない国ですからみんながくたびれますよね。1721年には「ニスタットの和約」が結ばれて、北方戦争は終わります。これはスウェーデンの死亡診断書といわれていて、スウェーデンは大陸やロシア近辺に持っていた領土を全部失いました。この結果、ロシアがバルト3国を入手して、ピョートルが皇帝を称します。もはや誰もロシア帝国の誕生に異を挟みませんでした。

　スペイン継承戦争の方は「ユトレヒト条約」（1713年）で終わっていますが、スペインは、オーストリアにベルギー、ミラノ、ナポリを渡して、サヴォイア公国がシチリア王国を手に入れます。

　後にイタリア王家となるサヴォイア公はなかなか賢くて、「近くにあるサルデーニャ島と交換してくれませんか」と列強に申し入れます。列強はシチリアの方が人口が多く、豊かですから喜んで交換します。これで1720年にサルデーニャ王国ができます。サヴォイア公にとってはサルデーニャは近いので統治がしやすい。だから長期的な視野に立って交換したのです。このサルデーニャ王国が後にイタリアを統一するわけですよね。

　このころ、イングランドでは、スペイン継承戦争のために乱発された国債が引き金となって、最初のバブルといわれている「南海泡沫事件」が起こります。その後始末で名を上げたウォルポールが首相になって議院内閣制が始まります。
