『60』クロムウェルの航海条例

イングランドのクロムウェルはとても優秀な人間で、ネーデルラントが世界を仕切っていることは許さないと考えます。自分が共和国の頭領になると、まずネーデルラントとけんかを始めます。それが有名な航海条例です。ネーデルラントはコショウなどをロンドンに運んでは大もうけをしていたのですが、クロムウェルはイングランドへ輸入ができるのをイングランドの船舶だけと限定したのです。ネーデルラントの船はアムステルダムかロッテルダムでイングランドの積み荷を積み替えなければイングランドに輸出できなくなります。

　もちろん、積み替えにはコストがかかるので、クロムウェルはこれによってネーデルラントの力を弱めようとしたのです。その結果、第1次英蘭戦争（1652年）が始まります。

　1654年、スウェーデンのクリスティーナ女王が突然退位して、ローマに行ってローマ教会に改宗します。クリスティーナの気持ちも少しは分かりますよね。6歳でお父さんが死んでしまって、訳も分からないうちに女王になってしまって、やり手の大臣に操られて、そして大きくなったら新教徒の親分となってしまったわけですから、逃げ出したくなるのは何となく分かりますよね。

　クリスティーナは知的好奇心の強い人で、あの有名なデカルトに大金を払って家庭教師に呼んでいます。しかもクリスティーナは結構美貌だったらしく、横着だったといわれるデカルトも、のこのことストックホルムに出掛けていきます。ところがクリスティーナは若いころからめちゃ早起きで、4時ごろに起きて勉強する。デカルトも4時ごろにたたき起こされるわけです。それで風邪をひいて死んでしまいます。

　ロシアのロマノフ朝がウクライナを併合したのでポーランドと戦争になりますが、それを見ていたスウェーデンもポーランドに攻め入ります。双方から攻められたポーランドはたまったものではありません。中世に大きい領土を誇ったポーランドはがたがたになります。これを歴史上「大洪水」と呼んでいます。面白い命名ですね。ロシア軍とスウェーデン軍が入ってきてポーランド中が大洪水になってがたがたになってしまった。ここから北ヨーロッパでは、ロシアとスウェーデンが覇権を争うようになるわけです。

　1652年、ネーデルラントの東インド会社はインド洋の覇権を獲得した最後に喜望峰（ケープタウン）に入植します。これからまた英蘭の因縁の争いが延々と続くわけですが、南アフリカはもともとネーデルラントの東インド会社がつくった国なんです。

　クロムウェルが没すると、息子は気が弱い人だったので、「イングランドを自分はとても背負えへんわ」ということで自ら護国卿というポストを返上します。それでチャールズ1世の子どものチャールズ2世が亡命先から帰ってきます。かわいそうなのはクロムウェルで、王政復古したらクロムウェルのお墓が掘り起こされて、クロムウェルの頭蓋骨が英国の議会の屋根に長期にわたってさらされるという仕打ちを受けています。国王を殺したのでしょうがないといえばしょうがないのですが、クロムウェルのやったことは国益にはかなっているのですよね。ネーデルラントを主敵とみなし、アイルランド王国を占領しているわけですから。
