この時、現在の中国では黄河文明が起こり、漢字という世界で一番美しい文字が出現しました。四大文明の中で中国がこんなに遅れた理由は、メソポタミアから遠いからです。メソポタミアとエジプトは近いのですぐに影響を受けました。インダス川にも海伝いに行って1000年ぐらいで影響を与えることができました。シュメール文明が今から5500年ほど前、インダス文明が4500年ほど前です。ところが、中国はとても遠いので西アジアの影響が陸伝いに伝わるのに時間がかかり、それがさらに1000年以上かかったと考えれば分かりやすいと思います。

　では黄河文明がなぜ西アジアの影響を受けているのかというと、チャリオットを持っていたり、宦官（かんがん）という風習を受け継いだりしているからです。宦官というのはどう考えても農民の風習ではありません。強い雄にたくさん子供をつくらせたいから、弱い雄を去勢する西アジアの遊牧民の風習から来ているものですよね。

　B.C.1274年、混乱を治めて再び強くなったその後で、ヒッタイトとエジプト新王国がカデシュというところで戦います。これは世界で初めて条約が結ばれた大戦争でした。

　エジプトには「カデシュでめちゃくちゃ勝った」という浮き彫りが山ほどあります。戦争はだいたい両者とも勝った、勝ったと宣伝するのですが、この戦いはどうもヒッタイトが勝ったようです。カデシュはシリアにありますが、ヒッタイトが戦後、シリアを領地にしていますから。

　でも両者とも「やっぱり戦争ってしんどいな」ということに気づいて平和条約を結びます。この条約は記録上残っている最古の平和条約です。レプリカが国連本部に置かれています。やっぱり人間もちょっとは賢くなって、殴り合いだけじゃなく、外交交渉でお互いに平和を獲得したということです。

　そしてB.C.1200年ごろ、「B.C.1200年のカタストロフ」といわれている有名な現象が起きました。海の民と呼ばれている人々が西アジア一帯に現れて荒らし回って、西アジアの文明国がほぼ全部姿を消します。はっきりした原因は解明されていませんが、アイスランドのヘクラ火山の大爆発で気候がおかしくなり人々が大移動を始めたなどといわれています。昔は国境とかがありませんから、寒くなったり地震が起こったりしたらみんな逃げ出すのです。

　大移動で何十万人も見知らぬ人々が入ってきたら国は持たないでしょう。ヒッタイトが滅び、ミケーネが滅び、エジプトの新王国も滅びはしませんでしたが衰退してしまいました。メソポタミアとエジプトにあったほとんどの文明国全部がガタガタになってしまったのです。カッシートも滅び、アッシリアも弱体化しました。

　強い人がいなくなるとどうなるでしょう。小さい民族が頑張る余地が出てきますね。それがフェニキア人であり、アラム人でありヘブライ人です。カタストロフのおかげです。

　「B.C.1200年のカタストロフ」にはもう一つ歴史的に重要な意味があります。それはヒッタイトが持っていた鉄です。高度な鉄器を作る技術はヒッタイトが独占していましたが、ヒッタイトが滅びた後、鉄工職人が方々に散っていくわけです。これによって鉄器時代が幕開けしました。
